Oral health is an essential part of overall health, influencing nutrition, chronic disease, and quality of life. Black dental pioneers helped establish professional dentistry in the United States while expanding access to oral healthcare for communities that were often excluded from care.

Ida Gray

Ida Gray was the first Black woman dentist in the United States. She owned and operated her own dental practice and dedicated her career to providing care for underserved communities while mentoring future generations of dental professionals.


Robert Tanner Freeman

Robert Tanner Freeman was the first Black dentist in the United States. His achievement helped open doors for Black professionals in dentistry and expanded access to oral healthcare for Black patients.


George Franklin Grant

George Franklin Grant was a dentist, inventor, and educator. He developed early dental devices and became the first Black faculty member at Harvard University, contributing to dental education and innovation.
