October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about safe sleep practices and support families affected by SIDS. This cause is deeply personal to me — I would have had a sister two years older than me, but she was lost to SIDS. It is a reminder of how important education and prevention truly are.
SIDS refers to the sudden, unexplained death of a baby younger than one year, usually during sleep. While the exact cause remains unknown, research has shown that safe sleep practices can reduce risk and save lives.
Safe sleep recommendations include:
Always place babies on their backs to sleep
Use a firm, flat sleep surface such as a crib or bassinet
Keep the sleep area free of pillows, blankets, toys, and bumper pads
Share a room with your baby, but not the same bed
Avoid smoking, alcohol, and drugs during pregnancy and after birth
Awareness saves lives. Families, caregivers, and healthcare providers can all help reduce the risk of SIDS by following and sharing safe sleep practices.
