Did You Know? Black Leaders Who Shaped Public Health
Black physicians and healthcare leaders have played a critical role in shaping public health policy, improving access to care, and addressing health disparities in the United States. Through leadership, advocacy, and innovation, their work brought prevention and equity to the forefront of healthcare.

David Satcher
David Satcher served as U.S. Surgeon General and dedicated his career to improving public health through prevention, education, and addressing health disparities. His leadership helped elevate national conversations around equity in healthcare.
Louis T. Wright
Louis T. Wright was a pioneering physician and public health advocate whose research advanced treatments for pneumonia. He also fought racial discrimination in medicine, helping open doors for future generations of Black physicians.
Joycelyn Elders
Joycelyn Elders made history as the first Black U.S. Surgeon General. She was a strong advocate for public health education, disease prevention, and open dialogue around health issues affecting communities nationwide.
