Quick Answer: The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon is on Sunday, November 1, 2026. In the final two weeks, runners should taper their mileage, prioritize sleep, eat more carbohydrates in the last 2–3 days, hydrate with water and electrolytes without overdrinking, and avoid trying anything new on race day. Stop and get help for chest pain, severe dizziness, confusion, or trouble breathing.
Peak Prep Season for Runners
The 50th edition of the TCS New York City Marathon is almost here, and thousands of runners will cross all five boroughs, including right through Queens. Whether you’re running your first marathon or your tenth, the next two weeks matter. These NYC Marathon training tips from Outlier Health & Wellness in Fresh Meadows, Queens will help you stay strong and injury-free.
1. Taper the Right Way (2 Weeks Out)
- Cut back your mileage gradually while keeping a few short, easy runs at race pace.
- Don’t cram in extra training. Fitness is built. Now your body needs time to recover.
- Sleep 7–9 hours a night. Sleep is when muscles repair.
- Listen to small aches. Rest, ice, and get anything that’s getting worse checked before race day.
2. Fuel and Hydrate Smart
- Increase carbohydrates like rice, pasta, potatoes, and bread for the last 2–3 days before the race.
- Stick to familiar foods. Race week is not the time for new meals, supplements, or gels.
- Hydrate steadily, and use electrolytes on long runs and race day.
- Don’t overdrink. Drinking far more water than you lose can dangerously lower your sodium levels (hyponatremia). Drink to thirst.
3. Race Day Checklist
- Nothing new on race day: wear shoes, socks, and clothes you’ve already run in.
- Dress for a cold start. Wear throwaway layers at the Staten Island start, then shed them as you warm up.
- Prevent chafing and blisters with anti-chafe balm and moisture-wicking socks.
- Start slower than you think. The crowd energy makes it easy to go out too fast.
- Know the warning signs. Stop and go to a medical tent for chest pain, severe dizziness, confusion, fainting, or trouble breathing.
4. Recover After the Finish
- Keep walking after you finish to help your legs recover.
- Eat a snack with carbohydrates and protein within an hour.
- Rehydrate with water and electrolytes.
- Expect soreness for a few days. Pain that’s sharp, swelling, or getting worse should be checked.
Cheering in Queens?
Spectators should dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and plan transit ahead of time, since many roads close on race day.
