Dr. P Says: Being exhausted all the time is NOT a personality trait.

One of the most common things I hear from patients is:

“I’m just tired. That’s just how I am.”

Baby, no. Being exhausted every single day is not a quirky personality trait — it’s your body waving a flag. Chronic fatigue can be a sign of anemia, thyroid problems, sleep apnea, diabetes, depression, or heart and kidney disease.

Whether you’re 30 or 80, feeling worn out all the time deserves a real conversation with your provider, not a shrug.

Fatigue Is Often More Than “Just Tired”:

It’s normal to feel tired after a long day. It’s not normal to feel this way:

  • Waking up exhausted even after a full night’s sleep
  • Needing naps just to function
  • Brain fog or trouble concentrating
  • Muscle weakness or heaviness in your limbs
  • Fatigue paired with unexplained weight change

Many people accept this as “just getting older” or “just being busy” until an underlying condition is found.

Why You Should Pay Attention:

Untreated causes of chronic fatigue can lead to:

  • Worsening heart or kidney disease
  • Poorly controlled diabetes
  • Undiagnosed sleep apnea
  • Untreated depression or anxiety
  • Severe anemia

The good news is fatigue is often very treatable once we find the actual cause.

When You Should Seek Medical Attention:

Fatigue can usually be worked up at a routine visit, but some symptoms need urgent evaluation:

  • Chest pain or pressure with fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sudden, severe weakness on one side of the body
  • Fainting or near-fainting
  • Rapid, unexplained weight loss

Sometimes what looks like “just being tired” is actually the first sign of something that needs immediate care.

Tips for Staying Healthy

✔ Ask for bloodwork if fatigue lasts more than a few weeks.
