Stroke Awareness Month: Every Second Counts During a Stroke Emergency

Stroke remains one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. During Stroke Awareness Month, it is important to educate families and communities about recognizing the warning signs early and seeking emergency medical care immediately.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain becomes blocked or interrupted. Quick treatment can help reduce long-term damage and may save a person’s life.

Many people ignore early warning signs, hoping symptoms will pass on their own. Delaying treatment can lead to permanent brain injury, disability, speech problems, mobility issues, or death.

Know the signs of stroke using the FAST method:

F — Face drooping
A — Arm weakness
S — Speech difficulty
T — Time to call 911

Additional warning signs may include:

Sudden confusion
Vision changes
Severe headache
Dizziness
Difficulty walking
Numbness or weakness on one side of the body

High blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, and heart disease can all increase stroke risk.

Health Tips:

✔️ Monitor blood pressure regularly
✔️ Manage diabetes and cholesterol
✔️ Do not ignore sudden neurological symptoms
✔️ Stay active and maintain a healthy weight
✔️ Stop smoking if possible
✔️ Seek emergency care immediately if symptoms appear

Every second matters during a stroke emergency. Early recognition and fast medical treatment can save lives and improve recovery outcomes.
