Blood Cancer Awareness Month: Understanding Symptoms, Early Detection, and Support in Queens

Blood Cancer Awareness Month 2026: Know the Signs, Know When to Get Checked

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to increase awareness of leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other cancers that affect the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system.

At Outlier Health & Wellness, we believe knowing what is normal for your body—and recognizing when something has changed—is an important part of preventive health care.

Blood cancer symptoms can sometimes be subtle or resemble other common conditions. That’s why persistent or unexplained symptoms deserve attention.

What Are Blood Cancers?

Blood cancers affect the production and function of blood cells. Some of the most common include:

  • Leukemia – Affects blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow, and often involves abnormal white blood cells.
  • Lymphoma – Develops in cells of the lymphatic system, an important part of the body’s immune system.
  • Myeloma – Affects plasma cells, a type of white blood cell that normally helps the body produce antibodies and fight infection.

There are many different subtypes of blood cancer, and symptoms, progression, and treatment can vary significantly from person to person.

Know the Possible Warning Signs

There is no single symptom that means someone has blood cancer. However, certain persistent or unexplained changes may warrant further evaluation, including:

  • Ongoing or unusual fatigue
  • Frequent or recurring infections
  • Easy bruising or unexplained bleeding
  • Unexplained fever or night sweats
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Swollen lymph nodes, particularly in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Bone or joint pain
  • Shortness of breath or unusual weakness
  • Changes found on routine blood work

Having one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have cancer. Many can be caused by much more common conditions. The important thing is not to ignore symptoms that persist, worsen, or cannot be explained.

Primary Care Can Be the Starting Point

You don’t have to know which specialist you need before asking for help.

Your primary care provider can evaluate your symptoms, review your medical history, perform an examination, and determine whether additional testing is appropriate.

Depending on your symptoms and findings, this may include blood work such as a complete blood count (CBC) or other diagnostic testing. If something concerning is identified, your provider can coordinate a referral to a hematologist or oncologist for further evaluation.

At Outlier Health & Wellness, we also continue caring for patients who are seeing specialists—helping manage chronic conditions, medications, preventive care, and overall health throughout their treatment journey.

Don’t Ignore What Your Body Is Telling You

One of the most important messages this Blood Cancer Awareness Month is simple:

Pay attention to changes that don’t go away.

Fatigue may be from a busy week. A swollen lymph node may accompany an infection. Bruising can happen for many reasons. But when symptoms are persistent, unexplained, recurring, or becoming more noticeable, it’s worth having the conversation.

You don’t need to diagnose yourself. That’s what we’re here for.

Supporting Patients and Families

A blood cancer diagnosis can affect much more than physical health. Patients and caregivers may suddenly find themselves managing specialist appointments, medications, testing, treatment schedules, and major lifestyle changes.

Primary care remains an important part of that journey.

At Outlier Health & Wellness, our goal is to help patients and families understand their care, stay on top of their overall health, and coordinate with specialists when needed.

This September, Make Your Health a Priority

Blood Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to learn the signs, talk about family and personal health history, and remember the importance of routine medical care.

If something about your health has changed and you’re not sure why, start with a conversation.
